Am I in Love or Just Attached? How to Know the Difference

September 24, 2026ยท7 min read

Why This Question Is So Hard to Answer

Love and attachment both feel intense. Both make you think about someone constantly, feel their absence, want to be close to them. From the inside, they can be almost indistinguishable โ€” especially in the early stages of a relationship when everything is new and neurochemically amplified. But love and attachment are driven by different underlying needs, and they tend to diverge over time. Attachment is about what the person does for you โ€” the comfort, the familiarity, the relief of having someone. Love is about who the person is โ€” you want good things for them independent of what they do for you.

Signs It Might Be Attachment, Not Love

You think about them most intensely when you're anxious, bored, or lonely โ€” not randomly throughout a good day. The thought of them leaving makes you panic rather than sad. Panic is about your security; grief is about the actual person. You idealize them. You're more in love with who you imagine them to be than who they show you they are. When they do something that contradicts the image, you feel confused or betrayed. You're not sure you actually like them as a person โ€” you just need them there. You might not even enjoy their company that much, but the idea of not having them around is unbearable. You've felt this intense before, about someone else, in a relationship that had the same cycle of highs and withdrawals.

Signs It Might Be Love

You think about what they're experiencing independently of how it affects you. When something good happens to them, your first emotion is happiness for them โ€” not relief that they'll be in a better mood. You're willing to be uncomfortable for their benefit. Not in a martyrdom way โ€” but you can hold a hard conversation, give honest feedback, or encourage them toward something that's right for them even if it's inconvenient for you. You like them. Not just the feeling of being with them โ€” you actually like who they are as a person. You respect how they think, laugh at the same things, feel genuinely interested in what they have to say. You feel mostly calm around them. Not deadened or bored โ€” but not constantly anxious, either. Real love tends to feel more like safety than high drama.

What to Do With What You Find

Discovering you're primarily attached rather than in love isn't a verdict. Attachment can grow into love, and many long-term relationships started with more attachment than love and evolved. What matters is whether there's a foundation of genuine respect, shared values, and enjoyment of each other's company underneath the attachment. If there isn't โ€” if you're holding on because the alternative is scary, not because the thing you have is good โ€” that's worth sitting with.
