Love Bombing: How to Tell Real Intensity from Manipulation

September 12, 2026ยท7 min read

What Is Love Bombing?

Love bombing is a pattern of extreme, overwhelming attention and affection in the early stages of a relationship. The person doing it showers you with compliments, gifts, constant contact, declarations of love, and intense pursuit โ€” all before they really know you. The term "love bombing" was originally used by cult researchers to describe tactics used to recruit new members. It entered mainstream relationship psychology as therapists began identifying the same pattern in romantic relationships, particularly those involving narcissistic or manipulative partners.

Signs You're Being Love Bombed

The intensity arrives too fast: declarations of love within days or weeks, talk of a future together before you've had a single disagreement, referring to you as their "soulmate" before they know your middle name. They monopolise your time: they want to see you constantly, get upset when you make plans without them, or make you feel guilty for needing space. The flattery feels slightly off: compliments focus on how you make them feel rather than who you actually are. "You're the only person who's ever understood me" after two weeks is a signal, not a compliment. They give gifts that feel disproportionate: expensive presents, grand gestures, surprises that feel more about creating obligation than genuine giving.

Why It's a Red Flag

Love bombing isn't just enthusiasm โ€” it's a mechanism. The flood of attention creates a powerful emotional attachment quickly, which the bomber can then leverage. Once you're attached, they can use withdrawal of affection as a control tool. The cycle often goes: love bombing โ†’ withdrawal โ†’ you feel desperate to get back to how it felt at the start โ†’ they restore the affection (sometimes after you've apologised for something that wasn't your fault) โ†’ repeat. This is the pattern at the core of many emotionally abusive relationships.

Love Bombing vs. Genuine Intensity

Not every fast-moving, intensely affectionate relationship is love bombing. Some people are genuinely enthusiastic. Some connections do move quickly. The difference is in the quality and the consistency. Genuine intensity: the person is curious about you as an individual, respects your pace and boundaries, doesn't punish you for needing space, and their behaviour is consistent โ€” not perfect, but stable. Love bombing: the focus is on how you make them feel, they escalate when you try to slow down, they react disproportionately to any sign of independence, and the intensity feels like pressure, not warmth.

What to Do If You Recognise the Pattern

If you think you're being love bombed, the most important thing is to slow down. Take the relationship at your own pace, not theirs. Notice how they respond when you set a limit โ€” do they respect it, or do they escalate? Talk to someone outside the relationship โ€” a close friend, a therapist โ€” who can give you a less emotionally saturated perspective. Love bombing works partly because it isolates you from that outside view. Use the Love Bombing Test on Delulu Romance to get a reality check on what you're experiencing.
